A LOOK AT THE ACTION
Bryan Nash -April 23, 2012 XenoCon After-Ops Report:
DAY ONE - Saturday morning, the setup went unbelievably smooth. Donuts were voraciously devoured. The volunteers that helped get everything set up were very much appreciated, and they jumped to it like there were XP to be won.
We were ready well before the 9AM start of the first round of games, and I realized I hadn't actually signed up to PLAY anything! I snagged my friend Josh LeFebvre and we sat down to play a very cutthroat game of ZOMBIES!!! with Bill Ranes. It was right down to the wire, but Bill squeaked out the win at the end. Great game, and I highly recommend it if you're in the mood for screwing over everybody else at the table!
I then got busy setting up everything for the Grindhouse Arena. My good friend Bill Little and I ran this event back in February at Gamicon, and we were hoping to see at least as many players for this go-round. (Due to a family emergency Bill wasn't able to help me run it this time, but I have to thank Zach Scott and Brad Scott for helping make it a smash success!)
The table was raucous, rowdy and packed for almost the entirety of the 8-1/2 hour marathon, and I'm happy to report that out of the 44 pregenerated player character gladiators that I made for this monstrosity, only 17 were left unplayed after the smoke cleared and the dust settled!
The Grindhouse award winners:
- The Total Carnage Award (most kills): Jared Huffaker
- The Yellow-Bellied Diehard Award (stayed alive the longest): Scotti Grattan
- The Golden Lemming Award (died the fastest): Jared Huffaker
- The Golden Stork Award (most spectacularly Epic Fail): Josh LeFebvre
- King of the Mountain/Grindhouse Champion: Scotti Grattan
Also, I have to thank Dave Williamson from Games +1 for providing the prizes for the Grindhouse Champion - a $10 voucher for the store and a pack of Pathfinder PC minis! Thanks Dave, and congratulations to the winners!
After all the Grindhouse action was finished and the arena was loaded up in my truck, I got to spend a little time talking on a live broadcast of an internet radio show. I had a lot of fun talking about XenoCon, the Grindhouse, and my apparent excess of free time.
I would have loved to join Wes and the TPK Crew for the after-hours party at Buffalo Wild Wings, but I had to pack it in so I could get my old, worn-out carcass home for some much-needed sleep...
DAY TWO - I ended up missing the 9AM mark, mostly thanks to an unexpected detour/backtrack around a 5K that was going on in downtown Bettendorf. I got to do some quality breeze-shootin' with our TPK Games buddies and with Kim Eastland, after which I got recruited to play in the Ruby Phoenix Tournament Pathfinder game run by Andrew Lowery. He threw wave after wave of monks at us, but we just wouldn't go down. Unfortunately we had to call that one quits before finishing (due to the late start), but a good time was had by all.
The afternoon session, I finally got to sit down for one of the TPK events - The Tomb of Caragthax! Several of my friends had already played this, and had warned me that it was probably going to be deadly. Alas for them, we had some really lucky rolls in that first encounter. We had a really good group though, and we rolled right over ol' Caragthax and his flunkies, much to our GM's dismay. It was a blast!
The convention wrap-up went fantastically well. Again, we had a LOT of help (and we really appreciated every single one of you!!) and I'm pretty sure we even left the lodge cleaner than it was when we got it.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
My first-ever convention-organizing experience was much, much better than I'd dared to hope. I want to give Thank You's to Brian Allen, Dave Williamson, Randy Hancks, Mary Allred, Sonya, Keri, and everyone else who helped make XenoCon happen. But of course, the biggest thanks go to Wesley Dau - without him, this thing wouldn't have happened.
Thanks to the sponsors, thanks to everybody who ran games, and thank you to every one of you who showed up to play a game.
Watch out for that little green Xenoid, because he'll be back in 2013!
